Green Power Energy Company Limited (GPE) is a subsidiary of Gold Energy Company Limited.
GPE completed the Taungdaw Gwin solar photovoltaic (PV) facility within ten months despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The renewable energy project was commissioned in November 2022. The solar energy is connected to the Thapyay Wa substation – part of the national grid – via a 6.05 miles of 33-kV transmission line, also built by GPE. Indeed, GPE continues to build upon its track record and execution capabilities, and remains committed to contributing further to Myanmar’s clean energy sector in the coming years.
About Gold Energy Company Limited (GE)
A leading renewable energy play in Myanmar, Gold Energy Company is the first private company to be involved in hydropower, when it undertook the Thaukyegat (2) Hydropower project in 2008.
Clean energy has become increasingly important in Myanmar due to the confluence of three factors in recent years: i) the approach of the 2030 deadline of the Myanmar National Electrification Plan (NEP) and the need to increase domestic power generation capacity; ii) the rise in global energy prices since 2021; and iii) growing awareness of climate change and sustainability issues worldwide.
Gold Energy’s subsidiaries are involved in the following Build-Own-Operate (BOO) renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 170 Megawatts (MW) currently:
Thaukyegat (2) Hydropower Project – 120 MW (commissioned March 2013) – developed by Gold Energy Company Limited
Thapyay Wa Solar PV Project – 30MW (commissioned December 2021) – developed by Clean Power Energy Company Limited
Taungdaw Gwin Solar PV Project – 20 MW (commissioned Nov 2022) – developed by Green Power Energy Company Limited
Of special significance, Clean Power Energy Company was the first among 28 bidders of Myanmar’s first major nationwide tender for mega-scale solar PV projects (announced in May 2020) to be completed and commissioned. Indeed, the success of the 30 MW project in Thapyay Wa – achieved amid major challenges – underscores the ethos and execution capability of GE.
The experience at Thapyay Wa provided valuable lessons – as well as confidence – for Gold Energy’s GPE to complete its second mega-scale project – the Taungdaw Gwin solar PV project – 10 months ahead of schedule.
While solar PV energy is not new, it accounts for only about 1% of Myanmar’s installed energy generation capacity as at 2020. Building upon its track record and experience, GE aims to undertake more renewable energy projects in order to meet Myanmar’s energy needs in a sustainable manner.
